Rendr and VNS Health Host Mental Health Seminar on Depression Prevention

To raise awareness about mental health in the Chinese community, Rendr partnered with VNS Health to host an educational seminar in Flushing. Mental health experts provided attendees with practical strategies to recognize early signs of mental health challenges, assess their own well-being, and seek appropriate support.

Yating Ou, a behavioral health counselor at Rendr, explained that adjustment disorder is common among new immigrants adapting to life in a new country. Feelings of anxiety and depression often accompany this transition, and it can take anywhere from six months to two years to fully integrate into a new society. This, she noted, is a significant factor contributing to depression among Chinese immigrants.

Ou emphasized the importance of managing emotions and redirecting focus during periods of distress. She encouraged individuals to engage in social activities, reframe negative thoughts into positive ones, and acknowledge their emotions rather than suppressing them. These techniques, she said, can significantly improve emotional well-being.

The seminar attracted a large number of senior attendees, including Mr. Sun, a 70-year-oldcommunity member, who shared his personal journey of overcoming depression. He recounted how, after moving to the U.S. to live with his children a decade ago, he struggled with unemployment and dependency, leading to immense stress and feelings of hopelessness. He experienced severe insomnia and constant anxiety. Following a psychiatrist’s recommendation, he began medication and lifestyle changes, including social activities like swimming and spending time in nature, which helped him regain well-being.

Junjian Liu, the manager at Rendr Mental Health, highlighted the growing acceptance of mental health services in the Chinese community, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic. Teresa Lin, Vice President of Cultural Market Development at VNS Health, praised the strong turnout and engagement at the seminar, emphasizing the importance of encouraging more Chinese individuals to seek professional help when needed.
