The Updated COVID Vaccine: Who Should Get It
The FDA has recently approved the new COVID-19 vaccine. Doctors recommend that the elderly, immunocompromised individuals, and patients with underlying conditions consider receiving the updated vaccine.
Dr. George Hall, an internist at Rendr, has noted a significant increase in COVID-19 cases at his clinic since August, mirroring a 10% rise in hospitalizations in New York State.
The FDA reports that the new COVID-19 vaccine primarily targets the Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5 and is also effective against the latest subvariant BA.2.86, as both belong to the Omicron lineage. The vaccine is available to individuals aged six months and older, regardless of previous vaccination status, provided it has been at least two months since their last dose. Patients who have recently recovered from COVID-19 should consider vaccination three to four months post-recovery.
Dr. Hall emphasizes that individuals over 65, those with immunodeficiencies, and people with long-distance travel plans should get vaccinated promptly. With respiratory diseases peaking during the fall and winter, widespread vaccination is crucial for community immunity.
